Learn to Play Golf from LPGA Professional Gina Higbee

Gina grew up in Highland, Utah as Gina Poulsen and unlike many young golfers of today who start hitting while in diapers, didn't begin golfing until the age of 12. Her father took her golfing one day and she was hooked. Before long she had her own set of clubs and was playing in every junior tournament in the state.

Gina was twice named golfer of the year by the Utah Junior Golf Association and was a member of the Jr. America's Cup team three times. After playing high school golf for American Fork High, Gina went to school down the road at Utah Valley State College. Following two years there, she accepted a full ride scholarship to Idaho State University where she was captain and played No. 1 for the Big Sky Conference championship team and received a Bachelor’s Degree.

During her first year there, she married her high school sweetheart, Wes Higbee and they lived in Pocatello for the first year and a half of their marriage. After graduating from college, Gina decided she wanted to pursue golf as a career and turned professional in 1994. She moved back to Utah and worked at Thanksgiving Point and Hidden Valley Country Club. The Higbee’s then decided to start a family and had four beautiful children, three daughters and one son.

In July of 2002 she was hired at Cedar Hills Golf Club and closely watched the young course take shape. She actually put the first cut on most of the greens, tees and fairways. Gina served as the Director of Golf, at Cedar Hills Golf Club until March 2005. In September 2008 she attended her LPGA Teaching Recertification and graduated with honors and the highest in the school. She now teaches private lessons, golf camps and clinics and is the Head Girls Golf Coach at Lone Peak High School.

Gina is currently a member of the LPGA and runs the only LPGA-USGA Girls Golf Program in Utah County. She is the Lone Peak girls golf coach, She coached the Lone peak team to a 2016 state championship and the Lone Peak girls golf 2018 6A state championship team.

She continues to play with great passion for the game of golf and loves to teach and share that passion with others. Gina has built the largest golf academy in the state of Utah

Teaching golf for over 12 years, I have found very few non-athletic people. Most people are so worried about missing the ball, looking bad, feeling embarrassed, pursuing perfection and the straight golf shot. In my experience, those people who find some joy and success at golf, are those who have a GREAT ATTITUDE! They are at peace enough with themselves, their work, and their families, to pursue the learning journey of golf with a sense of humor, humility, open mind and heart, but most of all while having fun.

If we can have fun, we will be less tense in our minds, shoulders, arms, hands and fingers. Tension is the number one deterrent to improving one’s golf game. Just imagine moving some of the passion we feel about golf into our personal lives. After all, playing golf and being forced to deal with our own failures and frailties really does mirror everyday life, doesn’t it! Remember, golf’s a game, have some fun with it!
